Declawing is considered animal cruelty & is illegal in many countries & for good reason. Declawing (Onychectomy) surgically removes a cats claws by amputating the end bone of its toes which is the equivalant of having the top joints of all our fingers removed…OUCH! After surgery a pressure bandage is put on the legs and remains in place overnight. The cat will have alot of pain from this procedure for many days afterwards & without pain relievers the recovery is even harder. Also regular litter cannot be used for some time as it is too painful on the sensitive paws & can also get stuck in the wounds, which need at least a week or more in many cases to heal, & cause infections. Declawing effects cats in many ways some of which are the difficulty in climbing, sense of balance, inability of defending itself if needed which means that declawed cats MUST be kept indoors at all time, & also the natural instict of scratchin for various reasons such as stretching & relieving stress. It is not necessary to declaw cats it a few simple things are done. Trim your cats nails regularly (2-4 weeks) & providing them with appropriate places to scratch on such as scratch posts & boards. Declawing is cruel & should not be considered lightly if at all as scratching IS a natural behaviour for ALL cats big & small, the key is to provide & train a cat to scratch the appropriate place & not your furniture to keep both owner & cat happy.
